The effect of increased unplanned surgical admissions at a 12 bed critical care unit

چکیده
Introduction Unplanned surgical admissions to critical care are indicative of poor outcome in surgical patients [1]. There has been an increase in the number of unplanned admissions to critical care units, which impacts on the allocation of resources, affecting mortality [2]. The hospital where this study took place has seen a doubling of admissions in the last 5 years [3]. A large proportion appeared to be surgically related, prompting a review if outcomes have been jeopardised by the increased strain.

Bed Utilisation in an Irish Regional Paediatric Unit – A Cross-Sectional Study Using the Paediatric Appropriateness Evaluation Protocol (PAEP)
Background Increasing demand for limited healthcare resources raises questions about appropriate use of inpatient beds. In the first paediatric bed utilisation study at a regional university centre in Ireland, we conducted a cross-sectional study to audit the utilisation of inpatient beds at the Regional Paediatric Unit (RPU) in University Hospital Limerick (UHL), Limerick, Ireland and also exa...
متن کاملRate of preventable early unplanned intensive care unit transfer for direct admissions and emergency department admissions.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Appropriate patient placement at the time of admission to avoid unplanned transfers to the ICU and codes outside of the ICU is an important safety goal for many institutions. The objective of this study was to determine if the overall rate of unplanned ICU transfers within 12 hours of admission to the inpatient medical/surgical unit was higher for direct admissions comp...
متن کاملIncidence of low central venous oxygen saturation during unplanned admissions in a multidisciplinary intensive care unit: an observational study
INTRODUCTION It has been shown that early central venous oxygen saturation (ScvO2)-guided optimization of hemodynamics can improve outcome in septic patients. The early ScvO2 profile of other patient groups is unknown. The aim of this study was to characterize unplanned admissions in a multidisciplinary intensive care unit (ICU) with respect to ScvO2 and outcome. METHODS Ninety-eight consecut...
متن کاملDevelopment and validation of an intraoperative predictive model for unplanned postoperative intensive care.
BACKGROUND The allocation of intensive care unit (ICU) beds for postoperative patients is a challenging daily task that could be assisted by the real-time detection of ICU needs. The goal of this study was to develop and validate an intraoperative predictive model for unplanned postoperative ICU use. METHODS With the use of anesthesia information management system, postanesthesia care unit, a...
